KUE’s Sport Science Academy Holds a Symposium

A Symposium that conferred the impact of ‘Physical Education, Sport and Exercise o n the Growth and Development of a Healthy Lifestyle’ was held by the Sports Science Academy of  Kotebe University of Education on March 29, 2022, in the presence of academic staff, students, and alumni.
In his opening speech, Dr. Shimelis Zewdie, Academic Affairs V/President, Kotebe University of Education, reminded the audience that Kotebe as an academic institution has been branded in the enterprise of its Sport Science Academy, the then Department of Health and Physical Education. He also expressed that the present platform is an opportunity to raise the standard of the University. As to Dr. Shimelis, sport contributes to the growth of a country for it physically and mentally nurtures manpower who is central to any development endeavors.
Three papers, “The Long Journey of Sport Science Academy in the History of KUE”, “Age is not a Limiting …” and “Physical Exercise for Leadership, Health and Effectiveness” by Dr. Yemane Gossaye, Mr. Muluneh Girma and Mr. Netsanet Kassa (an alumnus of KUE) respectively, were presented and discussed in the event. The paper presentations were accompanied by aerobic and other physical exercises orchestrated by renowned aerobic and fitness team members who themselves were led by the alumni of the University.
In the event, a book titled “የአካል ብቃት እንቅስቃሴ ለጤናማ ህይወት” written by Dr. Tilahun Bereded was inaugurated. Individuals and institutions who contributed to the realization of the symposium were also given certificates of recognition.
In his closing remark, Dr. Yemane Gossaye, the Director of Sport Science Academy, noted that the Academy has plans to launch new academic programs, which give community service and entertain symposia that involve a range of stakeholders and alumni.

Kotebe University Education signs memorandum of understanding with University of South-Eastern Norway

Kotebe University of Education and the University of South-Eastern Norway have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly work on a project named Capacity Building in Integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene for ONE HEALTH on a long-term basis to foster academic cooperation, mobility of students as well as staff, and research collaboration in a meeting held virtually on March 11, 2022.

In his opening speech in the project kick-off meeting conducted virtually, Dr Tesfaye Negash, Vice President for Administration and Student Service, Kotebe University of Education, underlined the importance of the project in enhancing the quality of education in higher education and thanked NORPART-Norwegian Partnership Programme for Global Academic Cooperation for funding it. He also appreciated the agreement as it happened in the advent that our university became a university of education (KUE). Moreover, Dr Tesfaye promised the participants to facilitate administrative matters pertinent to the project that come under his jurisdiction.

Thor-Egil Elide, the project administrator, on his part, noted that the project seeks to ensure the quality and internationalization of higher education in Norway and selected partner universities from developing countries through academic cooperation and mutual student mobility.

It is understood that the partnership agreement involves Jimma and Bahir Dar Universities in addition to Kotebe University of Education and stays in effect for the next five years.

ኮተቤ የትምህርት ዩኒቨርሲቲ ከታላቁ የህዳሴ ግድብ ግንባታ ማስተባበሪያ ብሔራዊ ፕሮጀከት ጽ/ቤት ጋር በመተባበር በህዳሴው ግድብ ዙሪያ ለዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎች ወቅታዊ ግንዛቤ ለመፍጠር ያለመ የውይይት መርሐ-ግብር በ26/06/2014 ዓ.ም በዩኒቨርሲቲው ዋና ግቢ አስተናግዷል።
ውይይቱ በተጀመረበት ወቅት የእንኳን ደህና መጣችሁ ንግግር ያሰሙት የኮተቤ ትምህርት ዩኒቨርሲቲ ፕሬዝዳንት የተከበሩ ዶክተር ብርሃነመስቀል ጠና፣ የህዳሴው ግድብ የድህነት ማሸነፊያ ተስፋችን መሆኑን ገልፀዋል፡፡ በመቀጠልም ፕሬዝዳንቱ ግድቡ የይቻላል አቅም መገንቢያችን በመሆኑ ወጣቱ ትውልድ የህዳሴው ግድብ አምባሳደሮች በመሆን ለዓለም ህዝብ ስለህዳሴው ግድብ መመስከር እና በየዕለቱም መናገር ብሎም በቀጣይነት ድጋፉን ማጠናከር ይጠበቅባቸዋል ብለዋል፡፡ የዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎች ከሚመገቡት ምግብ በመቀነስ ለህዳሴው ግድብ ስኬት የበኩላቸውን አስተዋፅኦ ሲያበረክቱ መቆየታቸውን ያስታወሱት የዩኒቨርሲቲው ፕሬዝዳንት፣ በቀጣይም ከድህነት እና ከጨለማ ውስጥ የመውጣት አስተሳሰብ በማጎልበት በእውቀታችን፣ በገንዘባችንና በጉልበታችን አስፈላጊውን ድጋፍ ሁሉ ማድረግ ያስፈልጋል ሲሉ ተናግረዋል፡፡
የትምህርት ሚኒስቴር ተወካይ የሆኑት ዶክተር ታምራት ይገዙ በበኩላቸው ትምህርት ከድህነት ለመውጣት ከፍተኛ ሚና ያለው በመሆኑ መንግሥት ለትምህርት ልዩ ትኩረት በመስጠት እየሰራ የሚገኝ መሆኑን ጠቅሰው፣ በእውቀት የታነፀ እና ሀገርን ከድህነት ለማውጣት ቁርጠኛ የሆነ ትውልድ ለማፍራት በተለይ የወጣቱ ትውልድ ተሳትፎ ወሳኝ መሆኑን አመልክተዋል፡፡ ወጣቱ ትውልድ ባለፉት ዓመታት ለህዳሴው ግድብ መሳካት ቦንድ በመግዛት ያሳየው የነቃ ተሳትፎ ለሀገሩ እድገት የሚቆረቆር ዜጋ እያፈራን ስለመሆኑ ምስክር ነው በማለትም ተናግረዋል፡፡
በዕለቱም ለውይይት መነሻ የሚሆኑ ሦስት ጽሑፎች ቀርበው በተማሪዎቹ ውይይት የተካሄደባቸው ሲሆን፣ ተማሪዎች በህዳሴው ግድብ ዙሪያ እውቀት፣ አስተሳሰብና አመለካከትን በአግባቡ በመቅረፅ እና በተለያዩ የማህበራዊ ትስስር ገጾች በማስረዳትና በማስተዋወቅ፣ አፍራሽ አመለካከቶችን በመመከት እንዲሁም ትክክለኛውን መረጃ በመስጠት የአምባሳደርነት ሚናቸውን መወጣት አለባቸው ተብሏል፡፡ ተማሪዎችም በበኩላቸው የራሳቸውን ሚና እንደሚወጡ ገልጸዋል፡፡
የታላቁ ህዳሴ ግድብ ግንባታ ማስተባበሪያ ብሔራዊ ፕሮጀከት ጽ/ቤት ዋና ዳይሬክተር ዶክተር አረጋዊ በርሄ ከዩኒቨርሲቲ ተማሪዎች ጋር የተደረገው ውይይት ውጤታማ እንደነበር ጠቅሰው ተማሪዎችም ሀገሪቱን ከጨለማ ወደ ብርሃን ለማሸጋገር በሚደረገው ጥረት የእስካሁኑን ድጋፍ አጠናክረው እንዲቀጥሉ አሳስበዋል፡፡

KUE’s Science Shared Campus Students Excel in their ESLCE Results

All students of Science Shared Campus of Kotebe University of Education (KUE) who sat for Ethiopian School Leaving Certificate Examination (ESLCE) in 2021/ 2013 E.C. have scored marvelous results. Out of the 78 students who took the exams, 42 have scored 600 and above while the remaining 36 have got results which range between 529 and 600. This batch’s result is uniquely impressive as the highest scorer, Alazar Teka Gemechu with 659 points out of 700, of the year is from KUE’s Science Shared Campus. The University thus proudly congratulates the brilliant scientists- and engineers-to-be and their parents on the outshining success.

It is apparent that the project was initially funded and launched by STEM power – Ethiopia though it was handed over to the University eventually. The then KMU decided to own the project as the initiator had a shortage of budget to run it. The President then took the initiative to own and run the project, and since then he has been striving to make it fruitful.
The founding President of the then KMU, and now KUE, Honourable  Dr. Berhanemeskel Tena, and the management members of the University had set up Science Shared Campus with the intention of nurturing the young talented generation from the grassroots level to help them excel at their inborn gifts and shape them towards what they aspire to be. The President has accentuated that he has had confidence from the very beginning that these children could be well monitored and supported to become successful in ESLCE, and he also believes that they would become the scientists and engineers who would change the nation and the world at large. It was with this goal in mind that the Institute (i.e. Science Shared Campus) was established, the President added. It was also said that the University continues to strengthen and make sure the sustainability of the program that it started about six years ago.
The President hopes that this school of tomorrow’s scientists and engineers would be more equipped than ever, and it continues to be supported with all possible services and assets. It has also been anticipated that if the Government of Ethiopia (MoE) gives due attention to these brilliant and promising students, and organizes a way to place them together with a campus at a university. It is believed that, if this is to happen, these students would continue excelling and shining together.
It is also unforgettable that, of the 2020/21 batch, 58 had scored 4.00 and the rest had got 3.8 in their ESLCE. Incredibly, almost all of them have won scholarships and joined the University of Technology in India.

Kotebe University of Education Delivers Training on Engagement in Research to Its Academic Staff

Kotebe University of Education delivered training on ‘Academic Staff’s Engagement in Research as Professional Development.’ In his opening speech, Honourable Dr. Berhanemeskel Tena, the President, emphasized the importance of the training for updating staff’s skills, adding personal and institutional values, developing a culture of undertaking research, and then creating knowledge. He also encouraged the staff to engage in carrying out research to share knowledge and shine together, as to his words.
Two renowned educators and researchers, Prof.Yelaw Indawoke and Prof. Belay Terefa, from Bahir Dar University and Addis Ababa University respectively, have been invited to deliver the training.
Prof. Yalew has shared his rich experience and the modus operandi of undertaking research and publishing scholastic articles. On top of sharing his extraordinary experience of conducting research and publishing articles, Prof. Belay has underscored the essence of having a passion for conducting research regardless of the challenges the staff might face. He also underlined that researchers need to develop the wisdom of taking the challenges as opportunities to bring change in the status quo.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Berhanemeskel inspired the trainees to apply the experiences they gained from the two scholars who delivered the training.
The participants of the training have finally reflected on the thoughts shared and discussed in the event.

Kotebe University of Education Delivers Training on the Role of Teachers in Boosting STEM Education in Primary and Secondary Schools

 
Kotebe University of Education delivered a two-day training to selected primary and high school teachers in Addis Ababa on enhancing their understanding and implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in their respective schools, from February 21-22, 2022.
In his opening speech, Dr. Tena Bekele, V/President for Business and Development, Kotebe University of Education, remarked that STEM education is crucial for the development of a country as it encourages innovation that brings new technologies, products, and services. He also noted that the training has been prepared to inspire and support especially Science and Mathematics teachers for they shoulder greater responsibilities in realizing this endeavor.
Dr. Tewodros Mulugeta, the Director of STEM education at Kotebe University of Education, on his part, said that STEM education aids to produce creative and knowledgeable students who solve the complex and dynamic challenges that the 21st century poses. As to him, the present training focused on teachers as they are the primary stakeholders of STEM education.
The trainees spent the second day of the training visiting STEM education centers at Addis Ababa Science and Technology University.

Kotebe University of Education Holds a symposium on Environmental Safety and Sustainability

Kotebe University of Education (KUE) held a symposium, which was organized by the Faculty of Urban Development Studies, under the theme Environmental Safety and Sustainability on February 18, 2022. Honorable Dr. Birhanemeskel Tena, the President of Kotebe University of Education, in his opening speech, underlined the values of research in discovering and creating new knowledge in a range of disciplines. He also added that the platform enables the researchers to share the knowledge they acquired through studies with their students and colleagues. As to the words of the President, the University highly encourages this academic venture.
Dr. Yitayal Addis and Dr. Mekonnen Amberber presented the findings of their reviews under the topics: Exposure to Urban Particulate Matter and its Association with Human Health Risks and Urban Green Space-health Well-being Nexus: Implication for Green Prescription, respectively, while Dr. Yifru Waktole shared his research findings on Unprecedented Electrical Field-Induced Forward Osmosis (ElnFo) Against Concentration Gradient. The presenters also entertained questions and opinions raised by the participants.
In his closing remark, Dr. Yifru Waktole, Dean of the Faculty of Urban Development Studies, stressed the importance of undertaking similar knowledge-sharing platforms in the future and acknowledged individuals and offices who contributed to the realization of this workshop.

Kotebe University of Education Holds a Panel Discussion on the Issue of Exchange Rate Management in Ethiopia

The Faculty of Business and Economics of Kotebe University of Education held a discussion on the issue of exchange rate and its management in Ethiopia on January 27, 2022. In his opening speech, Honourable Dr. Birhanemeskel Tena, the President, remarked that the issue addressed by the Faculty is timely.
As to the remarks of the President, the foreign exchange rate is a problem that currently affects the livelihood of households of the nation in a number of ways.
Mr. Endale Teklu, the lecturer, and researcher in the Department of Economics presented the findings of his study that focused on the rationales for rising in the foreign exchange rate and the various factors that influence it looking at the issue from global and national perspectives. Taking advantage of the forum, the audience also raised ideas and opinions that further consolidated the issue under discussion.
In his closing remark, Dr. Hailemichael Mule, the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, underscored the significance of organizing similar platforms for further academic dialogues and policy briefs.
