Description of Library & Documentation Service
Historical Roots
The current library and documentation service at Kotebe University of Education (KUE) was established in 1976 as the Kotebe College of Teacher Education Library. It began in a single room with fewer than ten staff members and could accommodate only 50 readers. Due to space constraints, students had to study in nearby classrooms, which became known as the “Cold Rooms” because of their low nighttime temperatures. These classrooms have since been converted into dormitories.
Expansion and Modernization
The library underwent significant expansion in 1990 following the introduction of degree programs. A major milestone occurred when the institution transferred to the Addis Ababa City Administration, resulting in the construction of the current Main Library (now the College of Sciences and Mathematics Education Library). Today, the workforce has grown to over 60 professional staff members.
Current Facilities and Services
KUE now offers a blend of traditional manual services and modern digital resources across several specialized branches:
- Old & Main (New) Libraries: Each facility accommodates 450 students and provides integrated internet and e-reading services. Both operate 24/7 to ensure constant access for the university community.
- Postgraduate Library: Located on the 4th floor of the Business and Economics Building, this site features 72 reading seats and a dedicated 92-seat IT area.
- Female Students’ Reading Room: A dedicated space located conveniently near the female dormitories.
- Service Hours: While the primary libraries offer 24-hour access, the Postgraduate and Female Students’ libraries currently operate during daytime hours only.
