Department of Geography Education
The Department of Geography at Kotebe Education University (KMU) was established in 1989 though it was discontinued in 1996. The degree program in Geography and Environmental Education was re-launched in 2007/8 academic year under the auspice of Bahir Dar University. Since its establishment several students have been graduated in regular, extension and summer in-service programs and have been serving different governmental and non-governmental organizations with substantial contribution to the socio-economic development endeavors of the country. It is one of the most successful departments in the University in terms of the quality and relevance of the courses offered and employability of its graduates.
Currently, the Department is training students with three levels of programs. These are, Bachelor of Education (BEd) in social Studies specializing in Geography, Master of Education in Geography (MEd) and Doctor of Education in Geography (DEd). These programs are offered with different modalities (Regular, Evening/Extension and summer program). So far, there were three postgraduate programs actively functioning in the department; Master of Arts Degree in Geography and Environmental Studies offered in Summer In-Service program, Masters of Arts Degree in Geography and Environmental Studies Specialization in Urban Socio-economic Development Planning delivered in extension program as well as Master of Arts degree in Disaster Risk Management. The department has three staff members who are at associate professor academic rank, three staff with assistant professor academic rank, and seven staff members with lecturer academic rank. The department has also one GIS and remote sensing chief lab assistant.
