Department of Sports and Physical Education

Overview

The Physical Education and Sport Department has been a foundational part of Kotebe University of Education since its establishment in 1959 as Kotebe College of Teacher Education. Over the years, it evolved from a diploma-awarding department to offering degree programs, producing qualified physical education teachers for schools across Ethiopia. Its contributions significantly enhanced the college’s reputation in teacher training.

With the upgrade to Kotebe Metropolitan University (KMU) in 2016, the department expanded into the Sport Science Academy, offering multiple academic programs (five graduate, one undergraduate, and one diploma) while engaging in research and community services.

Now, as the institution transitions to Kotebe University of Education, the academy is proposed to be restructured as the “Institute of Physical Education and Sport” to better align with the university’s new mission and historical significance. This change reflects its continued growth and importance in Ethiopia’s educational landscape.
