(KUE, February 19, 2026) — A discussion was held on the implementation of the joint project between Kotebe University of Education (KUE) and the Teacher Education for Inclusion and Quality in Ethiopia (TEFIQ) program.
Opening the session, the President of Kotebe University of Education, Dr. Teshome Nekatibeb, stated that the university has a long-standing history in teacher education and is currently undergoing significant reforms with a strong focus on pedagogy. He emphasized that since assuming office, major efforts have been made to restructure the institution and transform it into a fully recognized Pedagogical University.
The President further explained that the university is revising its legal framework, developing a strategic roadmap, improving undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs, and implementing various institutional reform initiatives. He highlighted that the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT) training program is being strengthened to address the national shortage of qualified teachers. In addition, the university is preparing to admit international students through scholarship programs as part of its broader transformation strategy.
Dr. Ahmed Esmael, National Advisor for Teacher Education, noted that the project is being implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Kotebe University of Education, other universities, and regional education bureaus. The primary goal of the initiative is to strengthen inclusive education practices within Ethiopia’s education system. He explained that teacher educators are being trained to integrate inclusive pedagogy into their courses and apply it effectively in classroom practice.
During the joint discussion, participants stated that the collaborative efforts of Finnish and Ethiopian experts have shown promising results and should be sustained. Attendees included Marja Matero, Chief Technical Advisor of the TEFIQ Project; Pia Korpinen, Education Counsellor at the Embassy of Finland; Dr. Ali Sani, National Advisor of the TEFIQ Project; Dr. Messeret Habtamu, Head of the Office of the President; and other university directors.
