KUE Hosts Climate Justice Symposium

The Department of Urban and Environmental Management at Kotebe University of Education (KUE), in collaboration with Young Volunteers for Environment (YVE) Ethiopia, organized a Climate Change Symposium with the theme “Climate Justice for Innovation and Green Entrepreneurship: The Roles of Universities and Young People.” The event was held both in person and virtually, and was attended by Dr. Fekede Tuli, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Ephrem Tekle, Vice President for Research and Community Engagement; faculty members from the Department of Urban Management; students; and partners.
Opening the event, Dr. Ephrem Tekle welcomed participants from Ethiopia and across Africa, including representatives from Kenya, Somaliland, Benin, and Niger. In his opening speech, Dr. Ephrem stated, “Climate justice is not just about reducing emissions; it is about equity, fairness, and ensuring those least responsible for climate change are not left behind in the journey toward sustainability.”
The symposium brought together experts and youth leaders from across the continent. Contributions were made by leading organizations such as JVE International, Oxfam, Robert Bosch Stiftung, YVE Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Sustainable Food Systems and Agroecology Consortium (ESFAC), Can Africa Frontline Food Leaders (CAFFL), and the African Biodiversity Network (ABN). Discussions centered on the role of universities and young people in advancing climate justice through innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive action. The event concluded with a strong call to action, emphasizing that youth and higher education institutions are central to building equitable and sustainable climate solutions.
